This may seem like a story out of The Onion, but sadly, it is real. Egyptian newspaper al-Masry al-Youm reported earlier this week that the conflict in Egypt is affecting the psychological status of Zoo animals.
The finding comes after a study commissioned by the zoo management showed that the animals were in risk of committing suicide. The study shows that the giraffes, elephants, bears, rhinos and deer were the ones mostly affected by the chants of demonstrators, since these animals have very acute hearing.
The report goes on to say that certain animals are also depressed due to the lack of visitors. The main concern from the report is that certain animals may cause harm to themselves, and could actually commit suicide by hitting their heads against the walls. The report will be presented to the Minister of Agriculture soon, in hopes the government will take the necessary measures to protect the animals.
