Portugal is battling one of the worst fires in recent history. There are at least eight major fires still active in northern and central areas of the country. According to Portugal’s Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF), nearly 31,000 hectares of forestland have been destroyed so far in 2013.
The video below shows some amazing Portuguese resilience and ingenuity to fight the fires. A helicopter is seen refilling its water bucket from a nearby swimming pool and dropping the water in a nearby fire.
