I had heard the statement before during travel events. But I did not really believe it. But there it was again: “The U.S. is the only advanced economy that does not require employers to offer paid holidays or time off.” (From Time Magazine’s great article “Save The American Vacation” )
The article itself points out that only a few other places like Tonga, Micronesia and Kiribati don’t have paid vacation laws. Has this helped or hurt Americans become more productive over the years? Many think that not only lack of paid time-off has hurt American worker and productivity, it may also be the reason behind an increase in heart attacks, obesity and even mental illnesses.
Lets put this in financial sense: The total value of work done for free by employees because of unused vacation in 2013 was $52.5 billion!!!
So Americans are losing in all fronts by not taking their vacation days. Folks, stop doing this. Go on a vacation and unplug from the office. May I recommend a trip to Brazil? 🙂
